A mum has been trolled online after sharing her ‘parenting hack’ where she lets her daughter choose what she wants when they go shopping, then makes her pick just a few items to buy actually bought when they are at checkout.
The store employees then have to return all the unwanted items her child has thrown away, something the mother believes is “their job”.
Mom shares a controversial parenting ‘hack’
The clip has since been deleted but has been reposted by another TikTok user, @unpluggedmoments, who didn’t hesitate to share her thoughts on the controversial parenting advice.
“Apparently, she lets her daughter go into the store and pick out whatever she wants, but then when she gets to the checkout, she picks out a few items for them to buy and asks the clerk to return the items.” , she explains, sharing footage of the original clip.
“So she got a lot of heat for that because people were like ‘girl you’re not taking that stuff back,'” she continued.
The original mother then apparently made a follow-up post after the backlash defending herself, but she did herself no favors and probably only dug herself further into a hole.
“I don’t understand the world today, where people think they have the right to stand by their work,” she said.
“I ask an employee like, hey, I don’t have time to bring all this stuff back if you’re willing to help me, they’re usually so nice and say yes, of course I’ll help you.”
“But two, this is also their job. They are not there just to hang around. Their job is to help the customer in the store.”
But @unpluggedmoments told mom to “have more respect for them.”
She likened it to “going to a restaurant, sitting down and unpacking all the table settings, all the silverware that somebody has wrapped, and then go, oh, I changed my mind.”
“Right,” commenters say
It’s unclear why the mother allows her daughter to do this practice, but commenters had their own theories.
“It is not a life hack. She is just wasting people’s time. It’s also a terrible way to teach your child about budgeting and managing their expectations while shopping,” said one.
“Yes, who buys like that as an adult? It’s not like she’s preparing her daughter for the future,” another noted.
“She’s definitely the lady who leaves hundreds of clothes in my dressing room to return,” said one.
“Of course it’s their job to help customers, but mom has every right to add to their workload,” replied another.
“They have NO time to clean up after your baby,” someone else chided.
